Canada Immigration through Express Entry and the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program
From the words of Setareh Moradian Nejad, founder of SMILE to Canada
Hello! I am Setareh Moradian Nejad, and with over 5 years of experience in immigration consulting, I am here to answer your questions and concerns about the immigration process and permanent residency in Canada. As someone with extensive experience in this field, I understand how challenging immigration can be, especially when it comes to converting a work permit to permanent residency.
In this series of articles, we will examine one method at a time so that you can make the best decision for yourself. Today, we will start with Canadian immigration through Express Entry and the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP). These two methods are among the most common and fastest pathways to permanent residency for Iranians who are currently in Canada on a work permit.
Immigration to Canada through Express Entry
How to Calculate Your CRS Score?
Canada’s Express Entry operates based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). This system calculates your score based on various factors.
To accurately calculate your CRS score, you can use the online calculator on our website:
1. Age
The best score is for individuals between the ages of 18 and 29, which can be up to 110 points.
Solution: If your age is above this range, it’s better to act sooner to prevent a decrease in your score.
2. Education
The highest score is awarded for doctoral and master’s degrees.
Solution: If your degree is from outside Canada, make sure to have your credentials evaluated (ECA), and if needed, you can earn more points by continuing your studies in Canada.
3. Language Skills
High scores in *IELTS*, *TOEFL*, and *PTE* for English and *TEF* and *TCF* for French will significantly boost your score.
Solution: Strive to achieve higher scores in these tests. Especially if you need to improve in specific skills such as speaking or listening, taking supplementary classes and intensive courses can help. Additionally, if you are proficient in *French*, take the French language exams, as this language offers additional points.
4. Work Experience
If your work experience is over 3 years, you will receive the maximum score.
Solution: Be sure to demonstrate your work experience with valid documents, and if you have work experience in Canada, it will further increase your score.
5. Valid Job Offer
(Job Offer): Having a job offer from a Canadian employer can add up to 200 points to your score.
Solution: If you don’t have a job offer yet, you can connect with consultants or reputable job boards like Indeed and LinkedIn.
6. Education or Work Experience in Canada
Having work experience or education in Canada gives you special points.
Solution: Even a short educational or work experience in Canada can improve your score.
British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP)
The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program is another immigration pathway for permanent residency. In this program, similar factors such as education, work experience, and job offers are important. If your occupation is not on the province’s target occupations list, you must score at least 128 points.
Strategies to Increase Your BCPNP Score
1- Distance from Downtown Vancouver
If you live and work in areas farther from downtown Vancouver (rural or smaller urban areas), you can earn up to 25 points for one year of living and working there.
Solution: Choosing areas farther from the city center, especially if the cost of living is lower, can be a great advantage for you.
2- Salary Increase
Your salary is one of the important factors in the BCPNP scoring system. For every 1 dollar increase in salary, you can earn 1 additional point.
Solution: If your job position allows for career advancement, try asking your employer for a salary increase. Also, if you are changing jobs, be sure to consider the proposed salary in light of this scoring factor.
3- Improve Language Skills
As with Express Entry, language plays a significant role.
4- Get a Job Offer in British Columbia
Having an employer who offers a job can quickly boost your score.
5- Study or Work in British Columbia
If you can gain work experience in this province, your score will increase.

If Your Score is Not Sufficient…
Your score may not meet the required threshold, but don’t worry. You are not alone, and this happens to many people. In future posts, I will show you how you can increase your score or use alternative immigration methods. Depending on your situation, these pathways may be the best options for you.
