One of the three main programs of Canada Express Entry, is the Federal Skilled Trade Canada FSTP (Federal Skilled Trade Program).
This immigration program is designed for skilled tradespeople. The goal of this program is to attract skilled workers in technical and professional fields needed in the Canadian labor market.
The main applicant must have at least two years of full-time work experience in a technical or skilled trade job at the TEER 2, 3 level within the five years prior to applying for the Federal Skilled Trade Canada program. To clarify, this means at least 30 hours per week over two years, or the equivalent of 15 hours per week over four years if part-time.
If you work more than 30 hours per week in the chosen job, the extra time will not be counted towards your work experience, and only the 30 hours per week will be considered. In other words, the required work hours must be completed within the two-year period, and any excess will not be considered.
It is important to note that work experience without commission and salary will not be accepted.
To apply for the Federal Skilled Trade Canada program, it is essential to either have a job offer or prove your qualifications for the job by providing a certificate from the relevant authorities.
The job offer must meet the following conditions:
It must be from one or two Canadian employers.
It must have a LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment) or be exempt from it.
It must be a full-time position.
It must be paid.
The job must require at least 30 hours of work per week for one year in a skilled trade in Canada.
Note: At the time of application, you must be legally employed in Canada and be able to maintain this status until you receive permanent residency.
This certificate is only issued in Canada by the federal government or the relevant authorities in each province. To obtain this certificate, the relevant authorities in the province or federal government will review your qualifications, and if you meet the required conditions, you can take an exam to receive the certificate.
To take this exam, you must visit the relevant authorities in person in each province. Sometimes, it is necessary to undergo training by an employer in Canada to be eligible for the exam.
The process of obtaining a certification of qualification varies in each province of Canada.
For the Federal Skilled Trade Canada immigration program, no specific educational qualification is required.
It is important to note that having a Canadian degree or an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report for non-Canadian credentials – WES is one of the institutions that issue such reports – can increase your chances of receiving an invitation to apply.
Individuals of any age can apply for the Federal Skilled Trade Canada program, meaning there are no age restrictions for applicants. However, it is important to note that the younger the applicant, the higher their chances of acceptance, so the factor of time plays a significant role in the immigration process for skilled tradespeople to Canada. If you intend to immigrate to Canada through this program, it is advisable to take the necessary steps as soon as possible.
Having sufficient financial ability based on the number of family members is one of the most important requirements for obtaining permanent residency in Canada through the Federal Skilled Trade program. It is important to note that if you have received a job offer from a Canadian employer or are legally employed in Canada at the time of application, you do not need to provide proof of financial ability.
The table below shows the amount required to prove financial ability for a family.

To apply for the Federal Skilled Trade Canada immigration program, you must achieve the minimum required scores in all four language skills on the language proficiency tests (as shown in the table). The test results are valid for two years. At the time of applying and creating a file for this program, the validity period of the results should not have expired.

It is essential for the main applicant to meet all the requirements for employment in skilled trades based on the Canadian NOC (National Occupational Classification). This means that, for example, if a certification is required for a specific job (e.g., job “a”) in this system, the applicant must have it.
To obtain permanent residency in Canada through the Federal Skilled Trade program, your work experience must fall under the TEER 2, 3 categories and the following groups of occupations in Canada:
If you intend to immigrate permanently to Canada through the Federal Skilled Trade Canada program, make sure to have the following documents available before creating your profile:
Having these documents is not mandatory, but if available, they should be used.
After receiving an invitation from the federal government, you will need to send the following documents online:
Additional documents, such as photos, proof of relatives in Canada, or any other relevant documents, can also be submitted. Failing to submit these documents will not result in your application being rejected; their submission simply helps complete the personal documentation related to your application.
At this stage, check your eligibility. If eligible, carefully create your profile on the GCkey system using your details and documents, and submit it after verification.
If eligible, the immigration office will place you in the Pool along with other eligible candidates. Then, your score will be determined, and you will be ranked using several different factors. Finally, if you are among the top candidates, you will be notified to proceed with the permanent residency application for Canada.
While waiting in the Pool for an invitation, it is best to prepare for receiving it because once approved, you will only have 60 days to complete and submit your application.
Get your documents ready. Language test results and a police clearance certificate are examples of documents that require more time to obtain, and it may take longer than 60 days. Language test results have an expiration date, so ensure they are still valid at the time of application submission; if not, you may need to retake the test.
Use Job Match to find a job. Use the Job Bank database to search for jobs. Job Match helps you connect with Canadian employers looking for candidates with skills like yours.
Work on improving your score. While waiting in the Pool for an invitation, you can increase your score, thus increasing your chances of receiving an invitation. Activities such as improving your education, language skills, gaining more or better work experience, or obtaining a valid job offer can help with this.
During this time, make sure to keep your profile up to date. Your profile must be entirely accurate. If your status changes, reflect that change in your profile. For example, you might have a child or improve your language proficiency. Also, correcting any possible mistakes is essential.
Based on the CRS Points System, individuals with higher points will receive invitations. There are three types of invitations. A general invitation is sent to individuals with the highest points. Another type is a program-specific invitation, which is sent to individuals who rank highly and are eligible for one of the Express Entry programs. The final type of invitation is category-based. The government announces categories for economic purposes, and invitations are sent to the individuals with the highest rank in each category.
If you receive an invitation, you will get a message in your account specifying which program you have been invited for and what actions you need to take. At this stage, the accuracy of your documents and information will be verified. If any essential details are missing or incorrect, your application will be rejected, and you will be banned from applying to Canada for five years.
If your situation changes in a way that lowers your rank, you must reject the submitted application so that it can be reconsidered in future rounds. This gives you another chance to improve your score while in the Pool.
Some examples of changes that might lower your score and make you ineligible are the expiration of your language test or the loss of a valid job offer.
